Dr. Bernard F. MacDonald of Hollywood, Florida, formerly of Waltham, died on Sunday, March 28, 2021 in the Seasons Hospice in Hollywood. He was 88.

A son of the late Allan and Florence (Chisholm) MacDonald, Bernard was born August 22, 1932 in Taunton. At the age of 12, he began working as a dental technician alongside his father; dentistry may indeed have been in his blood. Bernard went on to attend Tufts University for both his undergraduate and doctorate degree in dental science. In 1959 he purchased his first practice in Waltham and retired after forty-two years at the age of 67. He was known as having had one of the most tenured practices in the city at that time. He loved people, and they adored him.

He was a proud Navy veteran and honorably served during the Korean conflict.

Bernard married his sweetheart, Marjorie Saurman, in 1960 and they enjoyed fifty-two happy years together until her death on June 24, 2012. He had a deep love of all sports and especially had a passion for horse racing which was one of his many pastimes. It was at the track where his nickname "the Doc" originated from.

In addition to his beloved wife, Marjorie, Dr. MacDonald was predeceased by his brother and sister, the late Richard MacDonald and Lorraine Cali.

He leaves his sons, Brian F. MacDonald of Wichita, Kansas, L. Scott MacDonald of Falmouth, James A. MacDonald of Newton, and David C. MacDonald of Maynard; his grandchildren, Amanda Wells, Alysha MacDonald, Jared MacDonald, and Aubrey MacDonald; his great grandchildren, Charlie Jo Wells and Maggie Wells; his sister, Jeannette Bushee of Woburn and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will honor and remember Bernard's life by gathering for calling hours on Tuesday, April 6th from 4 to 7 p.m. in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
